Introduction
Use interactive devices to remind people of the arrival of the post-truth era. Subjective opinions are more important than objective facts, and the position determines right from wrong.
Background
At the beginning of 2020, the epidemic caused by COVID-19 broke out all over the world. Everyone was asked to stay at home, so the internet became the only source of information. However, the Internet was full of all kinds of conspiracies and rumors about the epidemic, it was hard to distinguish between truth and fearmongering or misleading news.
Some people believe that this epidemic is the first "infodemic".
Research
To get more opinions on conspiracy theories, I made a questionnaire and received 70 responses.
In the era of online media, the boundary between the producer and the recipient of information no longer exists, and the dissemination of information has become more rapid. In order to bring more benefits, someone publishes fake news. These have become hotbeds for the rapid development of fake news and conspiracy theories.
Believing in conspiracy theories is probably an instinct of human beings. People always hope to find a simple explanation for the complex and chaotic world. This explanation is that there is some kind of powerful force that controls everything with a purpose. People don't admit coincidences and think there's a purpose behind everything.
In the post-truth era, the truth is not important. People think that they have the freedom to choose and browse information, but the information that people can see is determined by their position. It seems that the truth is not important anymore, the more important thing is people's feelings. Subjective opinions are more important than objective facts, and the position determines right from wrong. People don't believe in official speeches, and the media is full of conspiracies and rumors. The truth is indistinguishable, and the information seen by eyes is no longer credible.
Concept
I came up with this project to remind people of the post-truth era, in which people’s perspective decides the information they receive. To visualize our information-acquiring process, I chose interactive installation to express my idea. I created an installation that combined Processing with an eye tracker. In this project, the viewer's vision determines the content appearing on the screen. When the viewer reads the article in depth, the words are disrupted, and the truth is hidden.
